Exploring Harry Potter Filming Locations in England

(originally written on mysteriousadventurestours.com)

If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter books and films, you know that many of the scenes were shot in various locations around England. From Hogwarts to Diagon Alley, these filming locations are as magical as they appear onscreen. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just looking for a fun vacation destination, here are 5 Harry Potter filming locations you can visit in England.

ALNWICK CASTLE – NORTHUMBERLAND

In the Harry Potter films, Alnwick Castle was used as the exterior for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The castle is located in Northumberland and was built in 1096. Today, it’s still an active castle and is open to visitors who want to explore its grounds. You can take part in broomstick flying lessons or hop on a guided tour of the castle to learn about its history.

GOATHLAND STATION – YORKSHIRE

Goathland Station is one of the most recognizable spots from the first film — it was used as Hogsmeade Station where Harry boarded the Hogwarts Express for his first year at school! Although it’s not an active train station anymore, you can still visit this location today and take pictures with the iconic steam engine that was featured in the film.

GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL – GLOUCESTERSHIRE

Gloucester Cathedral was used as two different filming locations — firstly, it was used to portray Hogwarts Hallways during Harry’s time at school and secondly, it was transformed into Godric’s Hollow where we meet Baby Harry for the very first time! Today, this cathedral is still open to visitors so why not head down there and explore all its corridors?

KING’S CROSS STATION – LONDON

King’s Cross Station has become one of the most iconic scenes from any of the Harry Potter films — if you don’t know what I mean then think back to when Ron had to drag an invisible car through Platform 9 3/4! Although King’s Cross station has been remodeled since then, there is still a designated wall with a ‘Platform 9 3/4’ sign which makes for a great photo opportunity if you ever find yourself at this station!

LEADENHALL MARKET – LONDON

Leadenhall Market served as Diagon Alley throughout both Chamber Of Secrets and Half-Blood Prince – although many of these shots were filmed on sets inside Leavesden Studios! Despite this fact, Leadenhall Market is still worth visiting if you find yourself near London – just be sure to keep your eyes peeled for any hidden entrances that may lead straight into Diagon Alley!

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just looking for a fun vacation destination, there are plenty of beautiful places across England that double up as Harry Potter filming locations!

So why not plan your own magical adventure today? Visit some of these amazing sites and get ready to feel like part of your favorite movie franchise! Who knows — maybe you’ll even run into Hagrid while walking through The Forbidden Forest (which actually exists!)…happy exploring!
