5 Haunting Tales from Romania: Ghostly Legends and a Chilling Encounter at Jilava Prison

Romania is a land steeped in gothic legends, ancient folklore, and supernatural mysteries. From eerie forests to haunted castles, its dark history is rich with tales of the unexplained. As someone who had the privilege of exploring Romania last Halloween with Mysterious Adventures Tours, I experienced its paranormal essence firsthand. Let’s dive into five haunting tales from Romania, and I’ll even share my own spine-chilling encounter at the infamous Jilava Prison.

Hoia Baciu Forest

1. Hoia Baciu Forest: Romania’s Bermuda Triangle

Nestled near Cluj-Napoca, Hoia Baciu Forest is infamous for its strange phenomena. Known as the Bermuda Triangle of Romania, this dense woodland has terrified locals and visitors alike with reports of bizarre disappearances, glowing orbs, and whispers that seem to come from nowhere.

One of its strangest mysteries is The Clearing, a barren circle in the middle of the forest where nothing grows. Rumored to be a portal to another dimension, those who step into it report feeling watched, hearing disembodied voices, or even experiencing physical effects like dizziness and burns. UFO sightings add to its mystique, with glowing lights often seen darting between the twisted trees.

Whether you believe in extraterrestrials, ghosts, or curses, Hoia Baciu Forest has an undeniable energy. Dare to visit, and you may leave with more than just a ghost story.

Argeș Monastery

2. The Tragic Tale of Argeș Monastery

The beautiful Argeș Monastery hides a chilling secret within its walls. Legend tells of Master Manole, the architect tasked with building the structure, who faced a terrible dilemma: the walls of the monastery crumbled every night, no matter how hard the workers toiled.

A spirit revealed the grim solution—a human sacrifice was required to stabilize the foundation. Tragically, it was Manole’s own wife, Ana, who was entombed alive within the walls. Her cries of despair are said to echo through the halls to this day, especially during storms. Visitors often hear weeping, whispers, or even soft footsteps—reminders of Ana’s unjust fate.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle

3. Iulia Hasdeu Castle: A Father’s Grief and a Ghostly Guide

Built by grieving father Bogdan HasdeuIulia Hasdeu Castle was designed under the guidance of his deceased daughter’s spirit. After her untimely death, Bogdan claimed to communicate with Iulia through séances, during which she gave him instructions for constructing the castle.

This hauntingly beautiful structure features spiritual symbols and even a dedicated Room of the Spirit, where séances were conducted. To this day, visitors report seeing Iulia’s ghost in a flowing white dress, playing her piano—a beloved pastime from her life. Some even hear faint piano notes drifting through the halls, though no one is there to play.

The castle remains a monument to a bond so strong, even death could not sever it.

poenari castle

4. Poenari Castle: The True Fortress of Vlad the Impaler

While Bran Castle often gets the spotlight, the real fortress of Vlad the Impaler is the isolated Poenari Castle, perched high in the Carpathian Mountains. Here, Vlad displayed his infamous brutality, impaling his enemies on stakes as warnings.

Visitors to Poenari speak of eerie wails carried on the wind, said to be the tortured souls of Vlad’s victims. Adding to the legend is the ghost of Vlad’s wife, who leaped from the battlements to avoid capture by the Turks. Her sorrowful figure is often seen wandering the ruins, a spectral reminder of her tragic end.

The atmosphere at Poenari is heavy as if the horrors of the past still linger in its crumbling walls.

Corvin Castle

5. Hunyadi (Corvin) Castle: A Cursed Fortress

With its towering spires and medieval grandeur, Hunyadi Castle (or Corvin Castle) is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture—and a hub of paranormal activity. One of its most chilling legends involves three Turkish prisoners who were forced to dig a well. After 15 years of grueling labor, they were executed, but not before cursing the castle: “You now have water, but no soul.”

Visitors often feel an oppressive sense of dread as shadows move unbidden, ghostly voices call from the dungeon, and fleeting figures pass through the corridors. The curse seems to hang over the castle like a dark cloud, a reminder of its bloody history.

Jilava Prison

Bonus: My Paranormal Encounter at Jilava Prison

During my Halloween tour of Romania, I visited the infamous Jilava Prison—a site drenched in suffering and sorrow. Built in the 19th century, this prison became a place of unspeakable horrors under both Nazi and Communist regimes, housing political prisoners subjected to torture and executions.

The moment I stepped inside, I felt an overwhelming sense of suffocation. My chest tightened as though an unseen force was pressing down on me. While guiding the group, I maintained my composure, but the oppressive energy was impossible to ignore.

At one point, I found myself alone in a cell, and I swear I heard faint whispers, though no one else was nearby. The heaviness intensified as we explored deeper, and I felt physically ill. It wasn’t until I stepped outside and grounded myself by a tree that the sensation lifted. Even our group’s psychic mediums felt the need to reconnect with nature after experiencing the prison’s lingering presence.

Jilava is not just a historical site—it’s a place where the past feels eerily alive.
